Integrating Digital Career Counselor into the classroom is one of the most direct ways to drive student engagement. When a faculty member guides students through the platform during class, students explore majors and career paths with intentional support rather than on their own, and they leave with data that is immediately relevant to decisions they are already making.
Florida International University embedded Digital Career Counselor into their "Discover Your Major" course as a core exploration tool. They integrated the platform into the course weekly, engaging students in conversation and reflection as they explored major options. See how they structured their class below:
Week One: Steppingblocks Resource Overview
In the first week, introduce Digital Career Counselor to your students. Walk them through the platform, let them log in and explore on their own, and set the expectation that they will return to it throughout the course.
Week Two: Personality Assessment
In week two, have students log in and complete the personality assessment. Walk them through the Personality Compare and Contrast activity in the Curriculum eBook Guide, then give them time to explore the major options that align with their results.
Week Three: Outcomes Activity
In week three, have students log in and complete the Outcomes activity in the Curriculum eBook Guide. Guide them as they connect what they find to the majors and programs they identified the week before.
Week Four: Search360 by Major Activity
In week four, have students log in and complete the Search 360: Search by Major activity in the Curriculum eBook Guide. Walk them through the accompanying worksheet as they dig into the details of the majors they are considering.
Week Five: Search by Career Activity
In week five, have students log in and complete the Search 360: Search by Career activity in the Curriculum eBook Guide. Walk them through the accompanying worksheet as they explore the career paths that connect to their interests and goals.
Week Six: Job Board Activity
In week six, have students log in and browse the Job Board to explore job titles that connect to their interests. Close out the unit by encouraging them to keep returning to Digital Career Counselor as they work through their major and career decisions.
Georgia College and State University
To meet the University System of Georgia's career readiness goals, the Career Center replaced its previous assessment tool with Digital Career Counselor. The switch gave students access to real-time data on career paths, employment trends, and salary outcomes in a format they could return to throughout their time on campus. They wanted to be sure they were meeting students where they were at, and supporting their career and academic decisions from the day they stepped on campus, all the way through graduation.
Between September 2023 and September 2024, Georgia College and State University integrated the Digital Career Counselor to every First Year Seminar (FYS) section at GCSU. This course includes a dedicated session led by Career Center staff. That session introduces students to career exploration tools and sets the expectation that career planning starts in the first weeks of college, not the last.
With more than 1,800 incoming freshmen enrolled in FYS that year, embedding Digital Career Counselor into the curriculum put the platform in front of every new student from day one. The usage numbers reflect that scale. They saw an addition of 1,935 Digital Career Counselor users, a 789.8% increase.
