Incorporating the Digital Career Counselor into the Curriculum

Digital Career Counselor is available to students around the clock, but knowing how to build it into campus programming is a different question. To help faculty and staff get started, the Steppingblocks team developed ready-to-use classroom activities that make it straightforward to introduce the platform to students in a structured, intentional way.

Career Feeds Page Utilization Activity

Purpose:

  • The purpose of this assignment is to give students a chance to explore and learn how to leverage the Digital Career Counselor Feeds Page for their unique needs.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to curate and align their feeds page with their own unique interest.

  • Students will learn about something that is of interest to them.

  • Students will discover helpful information related to their interests.

Suggested Next Steps:

  • Have students do the Personality assessment so they can begin to compare their interests to their personality type.

Compare and Contrast Personality Activity

Purpose:

  • This assignment aims for students to explore their personality type and align it with career paths that may be suitable for that personality.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to identify possible career paths that suit their personality types.

  • Students will be able to log in and understand how to use the personality quiz feature of Digital Career Counselor.

Suggested Next Steps:

  • Move forward into the outcomes and search 360 classroom activities.

  • Provide students time in class to continue to explore career paths.

Outcomes Activity

Purpose:

  • The purpose of this assignment is to support students in taking the first step to finding a job or internship by identifying top hiring companies, job categories and skills for their major. This will allow them to begin to plan out their collegiate career to set them up for success for their own unique goals.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will identify a foundation of where to start looking for jobs or internships based on their major.

  • Students will begin to explore skill sets that are vital to their major.

Suggested Next Steps:

  • Have students continue to explore their major outcomes by doing the search 360 by major activity.

  • Support students in exploring and setting up their collegiate experience to gain the skills necessary (ex. Support them in planning classes etc.).

Search360 by Major Activity

Purpose:

  • The purpose of this assignment is to support students in starting to think about the outcomes that their major could lead to.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will understand important education milestones attributed to their major.

  • Students will explore the different career outcomes for their major.

  • Students will be able to identify important skills for their major.

Suggested Next Steps:

  • Have students start to explore the multitude of career options for their given major by doing the Search 360 by career assignment.

Search360 by Career Activity

Purpose:

  • This assignment/activity will give students the chance to think about a career they are interested in and start to think about their action plan to get there.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to write a smart goal to help them reach their career goal.

  • Students will be able to identify skills and milestones they need to reach their career goal.

Suggested Next Steps:

  • Have students begin to explore the job board feature of the Digital Career Counselor or have them do the Job Board Assignment.

  • Provide students with other job or internship resources.

Job Board Activity

Purpose:

  • The purpose of this assignment is for students who are further in their career journey to begin to explore possible job openings or job pathways they can take once they graduate.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will start to think about how to align their skills and experiences with a job posting.

  • Students will begin to think about and plan what steps they can take to get a job they want post grad.

Suggested Next Steps:

  • Support students in their job search process by providing alumni and local company connections.

  • Host resume and cover letter workshops for upcoming graduates and those looking for and applying to internships.
